synopsis:
Ever wonder where your pork chop came from?
Do you know the name of the farmer who grew your vegetables?
The students at Eastside High School’s culinary team could tell you.

Seeds follows a group of high school students in Gainesville, Florida who are competing in the ProStart national culinary competitions. In 2008, with the help of their program director and a chef crazy about local foods, the team sourced locally and sustainably grown foods, some they grew themselves, for their competitions. Sourcing these foods was a challenge compared to the norm of pre-ordering packaged and frozen foods from around the country as most high schools do. The teams are judged on taste and presentation, not how far the food traveled or how the food was produced. Beyond the competitions, Seeds follows the students on trips to local farms, local seafood retailers and slaughterhouses with the hope of reeducating the budding chefs on ‘where food comes from’. In a time of question about the sustainability and economic viability of shipping preserved and packaged food around the world, Seeds offers hope and a challenge to viewers to create networks of support for small and sustainable farming. Seeds studies the relationship between local small farms and restaurants in America, struggling to compete with multinational corporations who control what we eat and where it comes from and shows that when it comes to downright taste, local can take the prize.
